Annapurna Base Camp vs Circuit: Which Trek Should You Pick?

Annapurna Base Camp vs Circuit is the question that stumps almost everyone planning a first Nepal trek — two of the world's greatest trails sharing one mountain range and one name. The Annapurna Circuit walks around the massif in fourteen days over a 17,769 ft pass; the Annapurna Base Camp trek walks into it in nine days, ending inside a 360-degree amphitheatre at 13,550 ft. Here's how to pick.

How do the two routes actually differ?

The Circuit is a journey: rice paddies to pine forest to Tibetan-style high villages to trans-Himalayan desert, with Manang, Thorong La and the sacred shrine of Muktinath strung along the way like set pieces. ABC is a destination: the classic sanctuary rhythm of ridges and stone staircases up the Modi Khola, through Ghandruk and Chhomrong, to a single overwhelming reveal past Machhapuchhre Base Camp — and hot springs at Jhinu Danda on the way out.

Which is harder — ABC or the Circuit?

The Circuit asks for fourteen days, a moderate-difficult grading, and ideally prior high-altitude experience for the 4 AM Thorong La crossing at 17,769 ft (5,416 m). ABC asks for nine days, a moderate grading, and tops out at 13,550 ft (4,130 m) — fit beginners are genuinely welcome, and it's the better first Himalayan trek abroad. If your leave balance or altitude CV is short, the Sanctuary is the honest answer.

What do the two treks cost from India?

The Annapurna Circuit trek package costs ₹85,000 per person from Kathmandu, including hotel nights in Kathmandu and Pokhara, all the long overland transfers, teahouses, meals on trek, and the ACAP permit with TIMS card. The Annapurna Base Camp trek package costs ₹60,000 per person and runs entirely out of Pokhara — two hotel nights, trailhead transfers, teahouses, meals and the same ACAP-plus-TIMS paperwork included. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal either way; a valid passport or photo ID is enough.

So which Annapurna trek is yours?

Choose the Circuit if you want the crossing — the biggest, most varied walk of your life and a pass day you'll retell forever. Choose ABC if you want the amphitheatre — maximum Himalaya per day of leave, with sunrise inside a ring of 7,000 m peaks. Both run in the March-May and September-November windows, and both have 2026 batches open on their TrekNova trek pages. There is no wrong Annapurna.
