Dzongri Trek in Sikkim: Kanchenjunga's Greatest Sunrise in 7 Days

The Dzongri trek in Sikkim is the answer for everyone who wants the Kanchenjunga trail's single most famous moment without ten days of leave. That moment arrives at Dzongri Top, just five days in: the same historic Yuksom approach as Goechala, the same rhododendron forests, and a sunrise at 13,780 ft over a horizon of giants — at a Moderate grade that fit trekkers can genuinely handle.

Dzongri Trek in Sikkim: Kanchenjunga's Greatest Sunrise in 7 Days

What is the Dzongri trek route, day by day?

Day one is the 150 km drive from NJP or Bagdogra to Yuksom, the monastery town where Sikkim's first Chogyal was crowned in 1642. Day two crosses into Kanchenjunga National Park on a forest trail strung with suspension bridges to Sachen; day three climbs through oak, magnolia and rhododendron past Bakhim to Tshoka, where Mt. Pandim floats above the clouds at teatime.

Day four is the crux of the Dzongri trek itinerary: the plank-lined trail through Phedang's rhododendron forest, breaking out above the treeline into the wind-blown meadows of Dzongri at 13,070 ft. Before dawn on day five you make the short, steep hike to Dzongri Top, where Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Rathong and Pandim light up one by one. Days six and seven retrace the trail to Tshoka and Yuksom, with the drive back to NJP by evening.

Which is the best time for the Dzongri trek?

Dzongri has a generous season: March to May for the rhododendron bloom — arguably the densest in Sikkim — and September to December for crisp, clear autumn and early-winter views. Spring is for colour, autumn for clarity; you can't really choose wrong.

How difficult is the Dzongri trek?

Rated Moderate with a 3/5 score, Dzongri is a strong first Sikkim trek for anyone with basic hill fitness. The climb from Tshoka to Dzongri gains over 3,000 ft in a day, so train for it: six weeks of regular brisk walking, stairs, and at least one long hike with a loaded pack. The itinerary's gradual build-up through Sachen and Tshoka does the acclimatization work for you.

What does the Dzongri trek cost?

TrekNova's Dzongri trek package is priced at ₹17,999 plus 5% GST against an MRP of ₹23,999. The fee includes all meals on trek, alpine tents on twin sharing with -15°C sleeping bags and mats, a trek leader with local Sikkimese guides and yak support, Kanchenjunga National Park permits and camping charges, and twice-daily health checks. The NJP/Bagdogra–Yuksom cab, offloading and insurance are excluded.

How to reach the trek, and what permits do you need?

Reach New Jalpaiguri by train or Bagdogra by air, then take the shared cab up the Teesta and Rangit valleys to Yuksom — around seven hours. Kanchenjunga National Park and Sikkim Tourism trekking permits are arranged by TrekNova and included; Indian citizens need a government photo ID and passport photos, while foreign nationals also require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Sikkim, with documents sent 15 days ahead.

A week, one great climb, and the grandest short walk in the Kanchenjunga range. Spring and autumn batches are open now on the Dzongri trek page — pick your sunrise.
