The Kashmir Great Lakes trek shows you lakes from passes; the Tarsar Marsar trek lets you sleep beside one. On the fourth evening of this seven-day trek you pitch your tent on the very shore of Tarsar, an almond-shaped sheet of impossible blue, and watch the light change on the water until dinner. Its twin, Marsar, plays harder to get — appearing and vanishing in the mist below Dachigam's ridges. Gentler than the Great Lakes and every bit as beautiful, this is our favourite recommendation for a first big Kashmir trek.
What is the Tarsar Marsar trek itinerary?
Day 1 is a four-hour, 102 km drive from Srinagar through Pahalgam and up the Lidder gorge to the postcard village of Aru at 7,920 ft. Day 2 follows the river 10 km through pine forest and Gujjar settlements to the wide green sweep of Lidderwat. Day 3 is a short, kind 5 km climb to Sikwas at 11,000 ft — deliberately gentle, because it is your acclimatisation day among streams and whistling marmots.
Day 4 turns a corner of the narrowing valley and there is Tarsar at 12,450 ft. Day 5 climbs the notch of Tarsar Pass, the trek's 13,500 ft high point, then traverses boulder fields to the quiet hollow of Sundarsar. Day 6 makes an early climb to the ridge above Marsar for the twin-lake view, then descends long and happy to the shepherd camp at Homwas. Day 7 walks the riverside trail back to Aru and drives you to Srinagar by evening.
Which month is best for Tarsar Marsar?
July through September. July still carries snow near the pass and the meadows are at their most flower-heavy; August is lush and warm; September trades some green for stiller air and sharper reflections on Tarsar. The lake camp is the reason you came, so any of these three months delivers.
How difficult is the Tarsar Marsar trek?
This is a genuine Moderate. Days are short — several are just 5 km — and the altitude builds patiently, which is exactly what makes it kinder than its famous neighbour. You should still arrive able to walk 5 km briskly without stopping, and your knees will thank you for a few stair sessions before the descent to Homwas. Health checks run twice daily on the trail.
What does the Tarsar Marsar trek cost?
The TrekNova trek package is ₹15,999 plus 5% GST (MRP ₹21,000). Included: all meals on trek, alpine tents on twin sharing with sleeping bags and mats, trek leader and local guides, ponies for camp equipment, and all camping fees and permits. Excluded: the Srinagar–Aru transfer (a shareable cab), backpack offloading and personal insurance.
How do you reach Aru from Srinagar?
Fly to Srinagar airport, then drive roughly four hours via Pahalgam up the Lidder gorge. The trek both starts and ends at Aru, so unlike a crossover trek there is no split transport to organise — one shared cab handles both journeys.
Permits and safety on the trail
Army and police ID checks are common on Kashmir trails: carry an original government photo ID, and a passport if you are a foreign national. Marsar sits on the edge of Dachigam's protected area, so the viewpoint plan can adjust to local advisories — the lake decides, and so does the administration.
