Hampta Pass Trek in December
Weather, temperatures, packing and honest advice — from the team that runs this trail.
The quick answer
We don't recommend Hampta Pass in December. The trail is at its best in Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep — and there are better options this month (listed below). The trek runs 5 days from Manali, Kullu, reaching 14,065 ft at its highest point, and is graded Moderate (3/5). The fee is ₹7,500 + 5% GST with permits, meals, camping and certified trek leaders included.
Why not this month: October to May the pass is buried under heavy snow and unsafe to cross; winter attempts risk avalanche-prone slopes on the Lahaul side.
Weather & trail conditions in December
Expect snow on the upper sections of the trail and frozen water sources near camps. Micro-spikes and gaiters (provided on our snow treks) become essential above the snowline, and daylight hours are short — days start early and end early. On Hampta Pass, expect daytime temperatures around 5°C on the trail and roughly -12°C at the highest camps after dark in December.
