Buran Ghati Trek: The Route With an Ice Wall at the End

Most trails save their drama for a summit view. The Buran Ghati trek saves it for the way down: right off the 15,000 ft pass, you rappel a near-vertical ice wall with the Kinnaur valleys spread out below your boots. Before that moment, the route has already given you one of Himachal's largest meadows and a hidden glacial lake — which is why trekkers consistently rate this 7-day trek among the finest in India.

What is the Buran Ghati trek itinerary?

Day 1 is a long, lovely 150 km drive from Shimla along the Pabbar river to Janglik, a hamlet of wood-and-slate homes at 9,200 ft. Day 2 climbs through oak and blue pine until the trees part and the enormous Dayara meadow rolls out beneath you. Day 3 is an easy walk to Litham, camped by the Chandranahan stream with the Dhauladhar filling the skyline.

Day 4 is a light-pack excursion up a chain of snow-fed waterfalls to Chandranahan lake, a sacred glacial pool at 13,900 ft, and back to Litham by lunch — perfect acclimatisation. Day 5 moves you up moraine to Dhunda, directly below the pass wall. Day 6 is the headline: summit Buran Ghati by mid-morning, then rappel and slide down the ice wall into wildflower country at Munirang. Day 7 walks you out through orchards to cliff-hung Barua village and drives you back to Shimla.

Which is the best time for the Buran Ghati trek?

May–June and September–October. Late May and June give you the full snow experience on the pass and the biggest ice wall; September and October trade snow for crisp air, golden meadows and stable weather. The monsoon months in between are off — the Pabbar valley gets properly wet.

How difficult is Buran Ghati?

We grade it Moderate-Difficult, and one prior Himalayan trek is strongly recommended before the ice-wall descent. The rappel itself is fully rigged and managed by our technical team — no rope experience needed — but pass day runs about 10 hours. Train for six to eight weeks: 5 km brisk walks, stairs, and at least one long hike with a loaded pack.

What is the Buran Ghati trek cost?

₹18,999 + 5% GST per person. The package includes all meals on the trek, expedition tents with -15°C sleeping bags and mats, ropes, harnesses and rappelling gear for the ice wall, micro-spikes and gaiters, a trek leader plus technical guide team, forest permits, oxygen backup and twice-daily health checks. The shareable cab between Shimla and Janglik/Barua, offloading and insurance are extra.

How do you reach Shimla for the trek?

Shimla is the easiest basecamp in Himachal to reach: overnight Volvos from Delhi (9–10 hours), the toy train from Kalka if you have time to spare, or a short flight to Jubbarhati airport. Arrive the evening before Day 1 — the Janglik drive starts early.

Do you need permits for Buran Ghati?

Yes — Rohru forest division and Kinnaur-side permits, all arranged by us and included; just carry a government photo ID.

May and June batches sell out first. Dates, batch sizes and the booking form are on the Buran Ghati trek page — the ice wall is waiting.
