Indrahar Pass Trek: Crossing the Dhauladhar from McLeodganj

From a café in McLeodganj, the Dhauladhar looks like a wall with no doors. The Indrahar Pass trek is the door — a 14,160 ft notch the Gaddi shepherds have used for centuries to move their flocks between Kangra and Chamba. In five days you climb that wall, sleep in a cave, and descend into villages that see more sheep than trekkers. It is the most adventure per day of any trek we run out of Dharamshala.

Indrahar Pass Trek: Crossing the Dhauladhar from McLeodganj

What is the Indrahar Pass trek route?

Day 1 climbs 9 km from McLeodganj through oak and rhododendron, past Galu temple and the famous chai shops, to Triund's grandstand ridge at 9,350 ft. Day 2 crosses the snowline at Ilaqa and scrambles up boulder slopes to Lahesh Cave — a natural rock shelter under a giant overhang, your bedroom for the night.

Day 3 is the crossing: a dawn assault up the rock gullies to the pass, where the Kangra plains shimmer south and Mani Mahesh Kailash rises north, then a wild descent into Chamba to the Chhata camp — about 10 hours in all. Day 4 drops through birch and pasture to Kuarsi, a slate-roofed Gaddi village where dinner may come with folk songs. Day 5 walks out to the roadhead at Hilling and drives you along the Ravi to the old temple town of Chamba.

When is the best time to cross Indrahar Pass?

May–June and September–October. Early summer keeps snow in the gullies — more adventure, micro-spikes provided; autumn is drier and clearer with huge visibility over the plains. We do not cross in monsoon, when the Dhauladhar's southern face turns into a waterfall, or in winter, when the pass closes outright.

How difficult is the Indrahar Pass trek?

Moderate-Difficult. The distances look short, but the Dhauladhar climbs steeply and pass day is a genuine 10-hour effort with sections where you use your hands. You don't need mountaineering experience — you do need solid fitness and a head for exposure. One prior trek helps; eight weeks of stair-heavy training is the minimum.

What does the Indrahar Pass trek cost?

₹12,999 + 5% GST per person, covering all meals on the trek, alpine tents and the cave camp setup with sleeping bags and mats, a trek leader plus a local Gaddi guide, ropes and micro-spikes for the gullies, and all forest permits and camping charges. Transport to McLeodganj and onward travel from Chamba, offloading and insurance are excluded.

How do you reach McLeodganj — and get home from Chamba?

Overnight buses run from Delhi to McLeodganj (10–11 hours); the nearest railhead is Pathankot and the nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), 20 km away. Because this is a crossover, you finish in Chamba — buses and taxis connect Chamba to Pathankot in about 5 hours. Plan your return tickets from Pathankot, not Dharamshala.

Do you need permits for Indrahar Pass?

Yes — Dharamshala and Chamba forest division permits for the crossover, arranged by us and included. Just carry a government photo ID.

Batch dates for May, June, September and October are live on the Indrahar Pass trek page. If you've done Triund and wondered what lies over the wall, this is your answer.
