Chandratal Camping: What a Night at 14,100 ft Is Like
Chandratal camping is on half the travel wishlists in India, usually because of one photograph: the crescent lake at dusk, turquoise going to ink, mountains upside down in the water. The photograph is accurate. What it doesn't show is what a night at 14,100 ft actually involves — so here is the honest version, from a team that camps there all season.
Can you camp right next to Chandratal?
No — and be glad. To protect the lake, camping is only permitted at designated sites a short distance away; the lakeshore itself stays pristine. Our camp uses approved ground with proper Lahaul-Spiti permissions, a short walk from the water. Anyone promising you a tent on the shoreline is planning to break the rules you'll be fined for.
How cold is a night at the lake?
Even in August, expect 2–5°C after dark and colder toward dawn; June and late September nights go below freezing. We issue -10°C sleeping bags and mats, but bring proper thermals, a down or padded jacket, a woollen cap and gloves. The cold is the price of the sky — at this altitude, in one of India's darkest dark-sky zones, the Milky Way shows up like weather.
Is the altitude a problem for one night?
It's two nights on our itinerary, and yes, 14,100 ft deserves respect — this is higher than most Himalayan trek summits. Hydrate from the day before, skip alcohol entirely, and expect a mild headache on evening one. Our leaders carry oximeters and check everyone daily; the itinerary includes no strenuous climbing, which keeps the trip Moderate rather than hard.
What does the Chandratal trip include?
₹7,999 + 5% GST per person covers all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 3 breakfast, tents and winter-grade sleeping bags, trek leader and local guide, all permits, and transport from Manali through the Atal Tunnel to the lake and back. A full exploration day at the lake is built in — 8 km of shoreline and ridge walking at your own pace.
When should you go?
June to October, with July–September the sweet spot — Lahaul's rain shadow keeps it dry while the rest of Himachal gets monsoon. If the road closes unexpectedly, we camp at Chatru as the alternate. Dates are live on the Chandratal Lake trek page; the lake handles the rest.
