Most people see Chandratal as a frantic hour on a Spiti road trip. The Chandratal lake trek treats the moon lake the way it deserves: two full nights camped beside it, in one of India's darkest dark-sky zones, watching the water shift from turquoise to ink and the Milky Way rise over the Samudra Tapu plateau. Three days, real high-altitude desert, no multi-day slog.
What is the Chandratal itinerary?
Day 1 is the journey as spectacle: through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul's brown-gold desert, up the Chandra valley past Batal's famous dhaba, and a short 2 km walk down to the lake at 14,100 ft. Camp goes up nearby; the stars come out in numbers that make people go quiet.
Day 2 is yours at the lake — an 8 km exploration circling the crescent shoreline and climbing the ridges above for the full moon-lake panorama. Day 3 gives you one last glassy dawn on the water before the drive back past Chatru's glacial rivers to Manali by evening.
Which is the best month to visit Chandratal?
June to October, dictated entirely by the road. June has snow walls lining the drive; July and August are prime, since Lahaul sits in rain shadow while the rest of Himachal gets monsoon; September and early October bring the sharpest light and the coldest, clearest nights. The route closes when snow shuts the Batal road.
Is Chandratal safe at 14,100 ft altitude?
We grade this trip Moderate for one reason only: you sleep at 14,100 ft, and that is real altitude. There is minimal walking effort, but the height demands respect — hydrate well from the day before, skip alcohol, and expect a mild headache the first evening. Our leaders run oximeter checks, and the itinerary never gains height faster than your body can follow.
What does the Chandratal camping package cost?
₹7,999 + 5% GST per person. The package includes all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 3 breakfast, alpine tents with -10°C sleeping bags and mats, a trek leader plus local guide, all Lahaul-Spiti permits and camping charges, transport from Manali to Chandratal and back, and oximeter checks throughout. If weather closes the lake road, we provide an alternate camp at Chatru — costs arising from closures are the one exclusion to know about.
How do you reach Manali for the trip?
Overnight Volvos from Delhi and Chandigarh arrive in Manali by early morning, which syncs perfectly with the Day 1 departure. Bhuntar airport is the flying option. Spend the previous night in Manali if you can — arriving rested makes the altitude kinder.
Do you need a permit for Chandratal?
Yes — Lahaul-Spiti district permits and Chandratal camping approvals, arranged by us and included. Carry a government photo ID.
July to September weekends sell out first. Dates are live on the Chandratal Lake trek page — come see what the fuss, and the silence, is about.
