Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary Trek: The Complete Hilley–Barsey Weekend Guide

The Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary trek — better known as the Hilley–Barsey trek — proves that a great Himalayan experience doesn't need ten days and a training plan. Three days, a friendly maximum altitude of 10,000 ft, and something no big expedition can offer: walking under a full canopy of blooming rhododendrons, more than twenty species in one sanctuary, with Kanchenjunga appearing between the branches framed in pink and crimson.

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary Trek: The Complete Hilley–Barsey Weekend Guide

What is the Hilley–Barsey trek route, day by day?

Day one is mostly the journey in: a scenic 140 km drive from NJP or Bagdogra via Pelling through West Sikkim's cardamom country to the roadhead at Hilley, followed by an easy hour-and-a-half, 4 km walk into the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary as the forest closes over you in pink and red. You sleep in a cosy trekkers' hut deep inside the sanctuary.

Day two is the heart of the trip — a slow, wonderful 6 km day wandering the sanctuary's ridgeline trails through carpets of blossom and silver firs, with sunset tea at the hut. Day three walks back out to Hilley and drives down via Pelling to the plains. Short trek, long memory.

When do the rhododendrons bloom in Barsey?

This is a spring trek, full stop: March to May is the season, and the bloom peaks from mid-March to early May. Time your dates inside that window and the entire hillside is in flower; outside it, you'd be walking a pretty forest without its main event.

How difficult is the Barsey trek?

Rated Easy-Moderate with a 2/5 score, Hilley–Barsey is genuinely beginner-friendly — the walking days are 4 to 6 km on gentle sanctuary trails, and the trekkers' hut means no camping learning curve. It's ideal for first-timers, families, and photographers who want time to linger rather than miles to cover. If you can manage a brisk hour's walk, you can do this trek.

What does the Hilley–Barsey trek cost?

TrekNova's Hilley–Barsey trek package is priced at ₹7,999 plus 5% GST, against an MRP of ₹9,999. The fee covers all meals on trek, the trekkers' hut or camping stay at Barsey, a trek leader with a local guide, and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary permits and fees. The shared cab between NJP/Bagdogra and Hilley and personal expenses are extra.

How to reach Hilley, and what permits do you need?

Take a train to New Jalpaiguri or fly to Bagdogra; the drive to Hilley runs via Pelling, so many trekkers add a day there for the monastery and skywalk. Sanctuary entry permits are arranged by TrekNova and included — Indian citizens need a government photo ID, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Sikkim.

Spring in Barsey books out fast for the same reason it's famous — everyone wants the peak bloom. Head to the Hilley–Barsey trek page on TrekNova and grab a mid-March to early-May date while they last.
