Every winter, this is the most common question in our inbox. Both treks run December to March, both end on a genuine summit, and both are beginner-accessible. But they reward different priorities.
Pick Kedarkantha if you want the summit experience
Kedarkantha (12,500 ft, ₹4,999) is the classic first summit: a 3 AM start, headlamps in the dark, and a 360° sunrise over Swargarohini and Black Peak. The trail is shorter per day and the campsites — especially Juda-Ka-Talab — are storybook stuff. It's also busier, precisely because it's so good.
Pick Brahmatal if you want views all day long
Brahmatal (12,250 ft, ₹7,999) trades the dramatic summit push for something rarer: a ridge walk where Trishul (23,360 ft) and Nanda Ghunti fill the horizon for hours, not minutes. The frozen Brahmatal and Bekaltal lakes add two beautiful camp days, and the trail sees noticeably fewer trekkers.
The honest verdict
First Himalayan trek ever? Kedarkantha — the summit moment is worth the crowds. Second winter trek, or allergic to busy trails? Brahmatal, without hesitation. Fitness needs are similar (both are 6 days), so let your temperament decide, not the difficulty grade.
