Kheerganga Trek Distance & Time: How Long Is the Climb?

The Kheerganga trek distance is roughly 10 km one way from the Barshaini roadhead — about 20 km round trip — with an altitude gain of around 4,500 ft to the meadow at 9,700 ft. Those numbers hide a lot of variety, so here are the honest timings, section by section, from a team that walks it every week of the season.

Kheerganga Trek Distance & Time: How Long Is the Climb?

How long does the Kheerganga trek take?

Most first-timers take 4–6 hours up and 3–4 hours down. The trail from Barshaini through Nakthan village is a steady riverside climb for the first half, then steepens through forest after the Rudra-nag waterfall — the last 3 km deliver most of the day's sweat. Regular chai and Maggi stops en route make natural breathers.

Can you do Kheerganga in one day?

Physically, yes — plenty of fast walkers do the 20 km round trip in a long day. But you'd be at the hot springs at midday with the crowds and miss the two things that make Kheerganga special: the night-time soak under the stars, and the dawn dip with mist rising off the pool. The meadow at night is the actual destination; walking down the same afternoon is like leaving a film at the interval.

How hard is the climb for beginners?

Easy-Moderate — the distance is honest but the trail is well-defined the whole way, and there is no tricky terrain in the dry seasons (March–June and September–November). If you can walk a few brisk kilometres at home, you can reach Kheerganga; the springs at the top are the best recovery protocol in Himachal.

What does the overnight trek cost?

Our 2-day Kheerganga package is ₹4,999 + 5% GST per person: all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 2 breakfast, alpine tents with sleeping bags, trek leader and local guide, forest permits and the bonfire when weather allows. The Kasol–Barshaini shareable cab is separate.

Do it the full way — one night, two soaks. Weekend dates are live on the Kheerganga trek page.
