The Manimahesh Lake trek is a pilgrimage first and a trek second — and it is better for it. For over a thousand years, Gaddi pilgrims have walked from Bharmour to the lake at 13,390 ft that mirrors Manimahesh Kailash (18,564 ft), the peak no mountaineer has ever been permitted to summit. Walking this route in yatra season, with bells, bhandaras and barefoot devotees for company, is one of the most moving experiences in the Indian Himalaya.
What is the Manimahesh trek route?
Day 1 drives 65 km from Chamba up the Budhil valley to Bharmour, with an evening among the 84 shrines of the 1,200-year-old Chaurasi temple complex. Day 2 continues to Hadsar and joins the pilgrim path 7 km along the Budhil gorge to Dhancho, camping beside a waterfall wrapped in legend.
Day 3 switchbacks up past bhandaras and prayer flags, across the treeline, to camp near Gauri Kund — the pool where Parvati is said to bathe. Day 4 is darshan day: a dawn climb to Manimahesh Lake as Kailash catches first light and its reflection steadies on the water, then a descent to Dhancho by evening. Day 5 walks out to Hadsar for the drive back through Bharmour to Chamba.
When does the Manimahesh Yatra happen?
August and September — the trek runs only in this window, aligned with the traditional yatra between Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami, when the trail is alive and the bhandaras are serving. Come during the main yatra for the full pilgrimage experience, or early September for the same trail with more quiet.
How difficult is the Manimahesh Lake trek?
Moderate. The gradients are pilgrimage-steep in places — the Dhancho to Gauri Kund day gains over 3,400 ft — but the path is well-made and dotted with tea stalls in season. Reasonable fitness plus four to six weeks of walking preparation will carry you comfortably; our leaders run twice-daily health checks because 13,390 ft deserves respect.
What does the Manimahesh trek cost?
₹9,999 + 5% GST per person. The package includes all meals on the trek, alpine tents with sleeping bags and mats, trek leader plus local guides, forest permits with yatra registration assistance, and health checks. The shareable cabs Chamba–Bharmour–Hadsar, pony or offloading for personal bags, and temple offerings are extra.
How do you reach Bharmour?
Reach Pathankot by train or overnight bus from Delhi, then travel 4–5 hours to Chamba, where the itinerary begins. Bharmour itself is the Day 1 drive — no need to arrange that leg yourself.
Is registration required for Manimahesh?
Yes — Manimahesh Yatra registration with the Chamba district administration, plus Bharmour forest division permits, both arranged by us and included. Carry a government photo ID and two photos.
The season is five weeks long at best. Dates are live on the Manimahesh Lake trek page — walk it once and you'll understand why people return every year.
