Manimahesh Yatra: Dates, Registration & How the Trek Works

The Manimahesh Yatra is one of the great pilgrimages of the Western Himalaya: a walk from Bharmour to the lake at 13,390 ft that holds the reflection of Manimahesh Kailash, the 18,564 ft peak no climber has ever been permitted to summit. Every August and September, thousands of Gaddi pilgrims make the journey — and trekkers who join them discover that the yatra's soul is as memorable as its scenery.

Manimahesh Yatra: Dates, Registration & How the Trek Works

When does the Manimahesh Yatra take place?

The traditional window runs between Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami, falling in August–September each year — and August–September is the only season our batches run. The holy dip days draw the biggest crowds and the fullest bhandaras; the shoulder weeks around them offer the same trail with more silence. Both are wonderful; they are just different pilgrimages.

Is registration compulsory for the yatra?

Yes — the Chamba district administration requires yatra registration for everyone heading up in season. We handle it for our trekkers along with Bharmour forest division permits; you carry a government photo ID and two photographs, and we do the paperwork.

What is the trek route like?

Five days, graded Moderate. Day 1 drives from Chamba to Bharmour and its 84-shrine Chaurasi temple complex. Day 2 reaches Hadsar and climbs 7 km to the waterfall camp at Dhancho. Day 3 switchbacks past bhandaras and prayer flags to camp near Gauri Kund at 12,600 ft. Day 4 is darshan at dawn — Kailash catching first light, its reflection steadying on the lake — before descending to Dhancho. Day 5 walks out and drives back to Chamba. The gradients are pilgrimage-steep, but tea stalls and fellow yatris keep spirits high.

What does the package cost?

₹9,999 + 5% GST per person, including all meals on the trek, tents with sleeping bags and mats, trek leader and local guides, forest permits with yatra registration assistance, and twice-daily health checks — sensible at 13,390 ft. Cabs from Chamba to Bharmour and Hadsar, pony hire and offerings are personal expenses.

How do you join?

Reach Pathankot from Delhi by train or bus, then 4–5 hours to Chamba, where the itinerary begins. The season is barely five weeks long, so August–September dates on the Manimahesh Lake trek page go quickly. Walk it once, and you'll understand why the Gaddis return every single year.
