Tourists on the Sonamarg road drive straight past Kullan village without a second glance. Their loss. The Marchoi trek turns off the highway there and climbs gently into a quiet valley — dark storybook fir forests, glassy trout streams braiding through knee-deep meadow grass, and snow ridges closing the head of the valley. At four days, an Easy-Moderate grade and a 10,500 ft ceiling, Marchoi is the ideal first Kashmir trek: short days, soft trails, big reward.
What is the Marchoi trek itinerary?
Day 1 is a 70 km drive up the Sind valley to Kullan, then a gentle 4 km forest walk to base camp among the firs at 8,050 ft — the traffic noise dies within the first kilometre. Day 2 climbs kindly along the stream to the wide Marchoi meadows at 10,000 ft, dotted with Gujjar dhokas.
Day 3 is yours to wander: climb the grassy shoulder for views down the Sind valley, follow the stream to its springs, or nap shamelessly in the grass before a bonfire evening back at camp. Day 4 is an easy downhill morning to Kullan and the drive back to Srinagar by afternoon.
When is the best time for the Marchoi trek?
June through October — a generously long window. June and July are lushest, August warm and green, September and October golden and crisp. Because the altitude tops out at 10,500 ft, Marchoi stays comfortable at the shoulders of the season when higher treks have already closed.
How difficult is the Marchoi trek?
Easy-Moderate, the gentlest grade in our Kashmir lineup. No pass, no boulder fields, no day longer than about six hours. If you can walk 4-5 km at home without drama, you can do Marchoi — which makes it perfect for families, first-timers and anyone easing back into the hills.
What does the Marchoi trek cost?
At ₹7,999 plus 5% GST (MRP ₹10,500), Marchoi is also the most affordable trek we run in the Valley. Included: all meals on trek, alpine tents on twin sharing with sleeping bags, a trek leader and local guide, a bonfire weather permitting, and camping fees and permits. Only the Srinagar–Kullan shareable cab and personal expenses are extra.
How to reach Kullan, permits and a nudge
Fly into Srinagar airport; Kullan is around two hours up the Sonamarg road. Army and police ID checks are routine on that road, so carry an original government photo ID — foreign nationals, bring your passport. This is as friendly as Kashmir trekking gets.
If you have been waiting for the right first trek, stop waiting. The Marchoi trek page has June to October batches — pick a weekend and come meet the quiet valley.
