Rupin Pass Trek Best Time: May Snow or October Gold?

The best time for the Rupin Pass trek splits into two seasons with two personalities: May–June, when the route is a snow trek with bridges, snowfields and a plump white gully; and September–October, when the same trail turns gold and the views stretch forever. Both are magnificent. Here is the month-by-month truth to help you pick.

Rupin Pass in May and June: how much snow?

Plenty — this is the full winter-wonderland version. Snow bridges span the river in the upper valley, Dhanderas Thach and Rata Pheri sit under white, and the final 100 m gully to the pass at 15,279 ft is a proper snow climb (ropes, micro-spikes and gaiters provided). Days run 10–15°C lower down, nights below freezing at the high camps. June softens the snowpack and swells the three-tier waterfall to its loudest.

Is Rupin Pass open in July and August?

We don't run it. The Rupin valley catches the monsoon properly — slick trails, swollen streams, hidden views — and the snow bridges rot dangerously. If you must trek in these months, pick a rain-shadow route like Miyar Valley or the Chandratal trip instead; Rupin will still be here in September.

Rupin Pass in September and October

The post-monsoon window is the photographer's season: washed skies, golden meadows at Ronti Gad, and the sharpest views of the Kinner Kailash range on the descent to Sangla. The gully holds firm old snow early on and turns mostly rocky by October. Nights get cold fast — expect -5°C at Rata Pheri by mid-October — and the season closes as winter arrives.

Which should you choose?

First big pass and want the classic snow photos? May–June. Prefer stable weather, autumn colour and quieter trails? September–October. Difficulty is comparable in both; the trek is graded Difficult either way and rewards two months of training.

The trek costs ₹19,999 + 5% GST per person from Shimla, all technical gear included. Both windows are live on the Rupin Pass trek page — pick your personality.
