Sach Pass Trek: Into Pangi, Himachal's Last Wilderness
Some valleys are remote. Pangi is something else — a region so cut off that it still runs on its own time, reachable only over gates like the fabled Sach Pass at 14,500 ft. The Sach Pass trek crosses that snow gate on foot, the way everything reached Pangi for centuries, and descends to Killar, a town perched above one of the deepest gorges on Earth. If you want the Himachal that tourism forgot, this 8-day journey is it.
What is the Sach Pass trek route?
Day 1 drives you 100 km from the temple town of Chamba up the Baira valley to Bairagarh. Day 2 walks the old mule road 12 km to the Satrundi checkpost meadow, sharing the trail with shepherds pushing flocks toward the pass. Day 3 is the crossing: a pre-dawn start up switchbacks between towering snow walls — they stand into August — to the trident-marked pass, then a knee-testing 16 km day ending in Killar above the Chenab gorge.
Days 4 and 5 are the reward: a gorge-edge walk to the hamlet of Sachu and back, past cliffside fields and wooden temples where hospitality hasn't heard of tourism. Day 6 is a spectacular full-day jeep crossing back over the Sach Pass road to Chamba, Day 7 is a built-in weather buffer, and Day 8 is departure via Pathankot.
When is Sach Pass open for trekking?
July to October, full stop. The pass opens only when the snow walls are cut and closes with the first serious autumn storms; our itineraries flex with BRO road updates. Early season means bigger snow walls and colder camps; September–October means stabler weather and golden light on the gorge.
How difficult is the Sach Pass trek?
It carries our Difficult grade. The crossing day is 16 km and around 11 hours, camps are remote, and evacuation points are few — which is exactly why we bring oxygen backup, run twice-daily health checks, and carry micro-spikes and ropes for the snow walls. You need genuine endurance fitness and ideally one prior Himalayan trek.
What does the Sach Pass trek cost?
₹21,999 + 5% GST per person. The package includes all meals, expedition tents with -15°C sleeping bags and mats, a trek leader plus local Pangi guide, micro-spikes and ropes, forest permits and camping charges, the Killar–Chamba jeep crossing, oxygen backup and twice-daily health checks. Travel to and from Chamba, offloading and insurance are extra.
How do you reach Chamba?
Take a train or overnight bus to Pathankot, then a 4–5 hour bus or cab up the Ravi valley to Chamba. Arrive the evening before Day 1 — Chamba's thousand-year-old Lakshmi Narayan temples are a fine way to spend it.
What permits are needed for Pangi?
Chamba and Pangi (Killar) forest division permits — arranged by us and included.
Batches are small and the season is short; dates for July to October are on the Sach Pass trek page. Very few Indians have seen Pangi. You could be one of them.
