Tosamaidan Trek: The Complete Guide to Kashmir's Largest Meadow

Some places are described in superlatives; Tosamaidan simply is one. The Tosamaidan trek crosses Kashmir's largest meadow — grass to its own horizon in the Pir Panjal of Budgam, ringed by the snow line, worked all summer by shepherds and their flocks. Over eight days you cross the whole of it at walking pace, sleep in the middle of the grass sea, and climb to Godsar, a small, intensely blue lake that almost nobody reaches.

What is the Tosamaidan trek itinerary?

Day 1 is a short two-hour, 45 km drive from Srinagar into Budgam's pine country to the village of Drung and its waterfall. Day 2 climbs old shepherd tracks through deodar and pine to Dhanwas at 8,850 ft. Day 3 is a rolling ridge walk to the Pehjan meadows, where flocks stream past all afternoon — working shepherd country, not a showpiece.

On day 4 the forest opens and simply does not close again: Tosamaidan spreads ahead at 10,170 ft and you camp in the middle of it. Day 5 traverses to the Noonwan bowl at the meadow's far edge. Day 6 is the lake day — a 10 km round trip up the rocky shelf to Godsar at 12,140 ft, the whole Pir Panjal marching south behind it. Day 7 recrosses the meadow and drives back to Srinagar, and day 8 is a buffer for weather, or a free morning for gardens and bakeries.

Which month is best for the Tosamaidan trek?

July, August and September, when the meadow is at full working strength. July is wildflower season, August the deepest green, September golden and quiet as the flocks begin descending. Gentle gradients make this one of the few big treks where every month of its season suits first-timers.

How difficult is the Tosamaidan trek?

Moderate, with an important caveat in its favour: the days are big in distance but kind in climb — the whole trek is built on shepherd gradients. The only genuinely stiff outing is the Godsar day. Standard trek fitness applies: brisk 5 km walks, some stairs, broken-in shoes.

What does the Tosamaidan trek cost?

The TrekNova trek package is ₹15,999 plus 5% GST (MRP ₹21,000). Included: all meals on trek, alpine tents on twin sharing with sleeping bags and mats, a trek leader plus local shepherd guides, ponies for camp equipment, and all camping fees and permits. Excluded: the Srinagar–Drung shareable cab, your Srinagar stay on day 8, offloading and personal expenses.

How to reach Drung, permits and safety

Srinagar airport to Drung is barely two hours, the shortest approach drive of any trek in this guide. Army and police ID checks are routine in the Tosamaidan area — it is a former field-firing range, long since cleared and opened for tourism — so carry an original government photo ID; foreign nationals need their passport. Itineraries adjust to local advisories.

Walk the grass sea

If your idea of the Himalaya is space, silence and sheep bells rather than summit selfies, Tosamaidan is your trek. July to September dates are live on the Tosamaidan trek page.
