Treks in Chamba: Kugti Pass and Himachal's Wild North-West

Treks in Chamba are Himachal's best-kept secret. While Manali and Shimla fill up, this ancient kingdom in the state's north-west — temple towns, the Ravi and Budhil valleys, and the Gaddi shepherd culture — guards trails where you'll share campsites with flocks, not crowds. Three of our favourite routes in the entire catalogue start here.

What makes Kugti Pass the connoisseur's choice?

Kugti Pass is the Gaddi shepherds' ancient migration road: 8 days from Bharmour's 1,200-year-old Chaurasi temples, through Kugti — the last village of Chamba — and over a raw 16,600 ft crossing into Lahaul's moonscape, exiting via Keylong to Manali. Blessings at the Kartik temple, a thousand sheep on the move, and a crossing that demands prior high-altitude experience. It is Difficult grade, ₹18,999 + 5% GST per person, June to September.

Which Chamba trek suits pilgrims and families?

Manimahesh Lake — a Moderate 5-day yatra from Bharmour to the sacred lake at 13,390 ft that mirrors Manimahesh Kailash, walked with Gaddi pilgrims each August–September. It is the gentlest doorway into Chamba's high country, at ₹9,999 + 5% GST with yatra registration handled for you.

And for the wilderness maximalist?

Sach Pass: 8 days over a 14,500 ft snow gate into the hidden Pangi valley and Killar, perched above the Chenab gorge — open July to October only, Difficult grade, ₹21,999 + 5% GST. Add Indrahar Pass, which crosses the Dhauladhar from McLeodganj and descends into Chamba's Kuarsi village, and you can enter this district on foot from three different directions.

How do you reach Chamba?

Train or overnight bus from Delhi to Pathankot, then 4–5 hours up the Ravi valley. Come a day early — Chamba town's thousand-year-old Lakshmi Narayan temples and the Bhuri Singh museum deserve the evening. Dates for all these routes are live on their trek pages; pick your door into the old kingdom.
