The Triund trek for beginners is the recommendation we make more than any other, and we make it without crossing our fingers. A 9 km trail, a 9,350 ft ridge, chai stalls at regular intervals and the Dhauladhar wall as your reward — if you have never slept in a tent or climbed anything taller than a staircase, this is the trek built for you. Here are the questions every first-timer asks us, answered straight.
Can an unfit person do the Triund trek?
A completely sedentary person will suffer; a mildly active one will be fine. The trail gains about 2,500 ft over 9 km at a steady gradient — 4 to 5 hours with breaks. Our honest test: if you can climb four floors of stairs without needing to sit down, you can do Triund. Two weeks of daily brisk walks beforehand turns 'possible' into 'enjoyable'.
What does a beginner need to carry?
Very little, because tents, sleeping bags, meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 2 breakfast, permits and a guide are all in the package. Bring a small backpack with a warm jacket, a spare t-shirt, water, sunscreen, a cap, a headlamp or phone torch, and broken-in sports or trekking shoes. The ridge is breezy after sunset even in May — the jacket is non-negotiable.
How cold does Triund get at night?
Expect roughly 5–10°C on summer nights and near or below freezing from late November into December, when the ridge can carry snow. Our sleeping bags handle it; your job is one good thermal layer and warm socks. The cold is also why the night sky here is absurd — stay out of the tent long enough to notice.
Is Triund safe for solo and first-time trekkers?
Yes — it is one of the most walked trails in Himachal, and on our batches you're with a trek leader, a local guide and a group that usually includes several other first-timers. Solo travellers regularly join and leave with a dozen new trekking partners.
How do you book it?
The package is ₹4,499 + 5% GST per person, batches run March–June and September–December, and McLeodganj is an overnight bus from Delhi. Pick a weekend on the Triund trek page — the version of you that trekked starts there.
