The Triund trek is where thousands of Indians fall in love with trekking every year, and the reason is simple geometry: a 9 km walk from McLeodganj puts you on a grassy ridge with the Dhauladhar wall rising 8,000 ft straight off it, while the Kangra valley twinkles below your tent at night. No experience needed, one weekend spent, one habit acquired for life.
What is the Triund trek route?
Day 1 climbs from the monastery town through oak and deodar, past Galu Devi temple and a string of legendary chai stalls with the best-located tables in India. The final switchbacks pop you out onto Triund's grassy ridge at 9,350 ft by late afternoon. Sunset show, bonfire, star-gazing.
Day 2 is worth the alarm: first light igniting Moon Peak and the Kangra plains is the single best free spectacle in Himachal. After breakfast, amble back down and be eating momos in McLeodganj by lunch.
Which months are best for the Triund trek?
March to June and September to December — one of the longest windows of any trek we run. Spring brings rhododendron blooms, autumn brings glassy visibility, and early December can add a dusting of snow to the ridge without closing it. July–August monsoon turns the trail slick and the views grey; we pause batches then.
How difficult is the Triund trek?
Easy-Moderate. The 9 km trail gains about 2,500 ft at a steady gradient with chai stops every hour — a reasonably active person can walk it in 4–5 hours without training. If you can climb four floors of stairs without drama, you can do Triund. It is the trek we recommend to parents, first-timers and sceptical friends.
What is the Triund trek cost with camping?
₹4,499 + 5% GST per person. The package covers all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 2 breakfast, alpine tents on twin sharing with sleeping bags, a trek leader plus local guide, forest permits and camping charges, and a bonfire when weather permits. Getting yourself to McLeodganj and personal expenses are the only extras.
How do you reach McLeodganj from Delhi?
Overnight buses from Delhi reach McLeodganj in 10–11 hours; Pathankot is the nearest big railhead (90 km) and Gaggal the nearest airport (20 km). Arrive by Day 1 morning — the group walks out before noon so you reach the ridge in time for sunset.
Is a permit needed to camp at Triund?
Yes — Dharamshala forest division permits for Triund camping, arranged by us and included. Just carry a government photo ID.
Weekend batches run nearly year-round and fill days in advance. Pick a date on the Triund trek page, pack a warm layer, and come meet the Dhauladhar.
