Bali Pass Trek in January
Weather, temperatures, packing and honest advice — from the team that runs this trail.
The quick answer
We don't recommend Bali Pass in January. The trail is at its best in May, Jun, Sep, Oct — and there are better options this month (listed below). The trek runs 8 days from Sankri, Uttarkashi, reaching 16,207 ft at its highest point, and is graded Difficult (5/5). The fee is ₹20,000 + 5% GST with permits, meals, camping and certified trek leaders included.
Why not this month: July–August monsoon swells the Ruinsara valley rivers and loosens rockfall zones; November to April the pass holds dangerous deep snow — a technical crossing becomes an expedition.
Weather & trail conditions in January
Expect snow on the upper sections of the trail and frozen water sources near camps. Micro-spikes and gaiters (provided on our snow treks) become essential above the snowline, and daylight hours are short — days start early and end early. On Bali Pass, expect daytime temperatures around 5°C on the trail and roughly -13°C at the highest camps after dark in January.
