Ali Bedni Bugyal vs Roopkund: Which Trek Should You Actually Book?

Ali Bedni Bugyal vs Roopkund is not a fair fight, because one of them shares almost everything with the other and skips its two biggest problems. Both treks start from Lohajung, both climb through Wan's oak forests to the great meadow of Bedni Bugyal, both stare at Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. Then they part ways — in altitude, difficulty, permits and price. Here is the honest breakdown.

What do the two treks share?

The soul of the route. The Neel Ganga crossing, the climb to Bedni Bugyal at 11,200 ft, the Bedni Kund reflections, the sunset light on Trishul — the stretch most Roopkund alumni remember most fondly is on both itineraries.

Where do they differ?

Roopkund continues up past Patar Nachauni and Bhagwabasa to the skeleton lake at 15,750 ft: 7 days, rated Difficult, prior high-altitude experience required, ₹17,999 + 5% GST. Ali Bedni tops out on the ridge at 11,700 ft, adds the glorious 11 km Bedni-to-Ali meadow traverse and a Didna homestay night: 5 days, rated Moderate, ₹10,999 + 5% GST.

And the big one: Roopkund access is currently restricted by forest department orders, with dates confirmed only after permit verification. Ali Bedni runs on regular Chamoli forest division permits with no such uncertainty.

Which one is right for you?

Book Ali Bedni if you want meadows, certainty and a Moderate grade — it is the better pure-beauty trek and the only sensible choice for a first or second Himalayan trek. Hold out for Roopkund if the lake and its mystery are the entire point, you have genuine high-altitude experience, and your calendar can absorb a permit-dependent date.

Or sequence them

Our favourite answer: do Ali Bedni now, register interest for Roopkund, and arrive at the skeleton lake one day already knowing the meadows by name. Both trails are on our Ali Bedni Bugyal and Roopkund pages.
