Brahmatal Trek Guide: Frozen Lake, Ridge Summit and Trishul Up Close

The Brahmatal trek is for people who want everything in one short winter itinerary: a frozen alpine lake wrapped in oak forest, a ridge-walk summit at 12,250 ft, and Trishul and Nanda Ghunti standing so close they fill half the sky. At 4 days out of Lohajung in Chamoli, the Brahmatal trek itinerary fits a long weekend off work.

Brahmatal Trek Guide: Frozen Lake, Ridge Summit and Trishul Up Close

What is the Brahmatal trek route?

Day 1 climbs 5 km from Lohajung through ancient oak and rhododendron to the quiet forest camp at Gujreni (9,350 ft). Day 2 breaks out of the trees onto Tilandi's snowfields at 11,120 ft, where Trishul and Nanda Ghunti suddenly own the horizon.

Day 3 is the reward: 8 km past the sacred frozen Brahmatal lake — where legend says Lord Brahma meditated — and along the ridge to Brahmatal Top at 12,250 ft, with Trishul at 23,360 ft filling your entire view. Day 4 is a long, happy 8 km descent back to Lohajung.

When is the best time for the Brahmatal trek?

December through March is the season. January and February give you the full deep-snow experience without the extreme cold of higher treks; December and March are slightly milder with excellent visibility. This is genuinely one of the best snow-for-effort ratios in the Himalayas.

How difficult is Brahmatal?

We rate Brahmatal Moderate. The summit day covers 8 km with sustained climbing in snow, so come prepared: six to eight weeks of regular walking with a loaded daypack, plus stair sessions, will make the trek a joy rather than a grind. Micro-spikes and gaiters are provided.

What does the Brahmatal trek cost?

The Brahmatal trek package costs ₹9,999 + 5% GST per person. Included: all meals on trek, alpine tents with -15 degree C sleeping bags and mats, micro-spikes and gaiters, trek leader and local guides, and all forest permits and camping fees. The shareable cab between Rishikesh and Lohajung, offloading and insurance are extra.

How do you reach Lohajung?

Take a train to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then the shared cab up the Alaknanda past Devprayag and Karnaprayag to Lohajung — about a 10-hour mountain drive. Arrive in Rishikesh the previous night; departures leave early.

Are permits needed for Brahmatal?

Chamoli forest division permits are required; we arrange them and they are included in the fee. Carry a government photo ID and two photos, and we handle the rest.

Book your snow window

January batches fill first. Check live dates and book on our Brahmatal page — four days from now you could be standing on a ridge staring at Trishul.
