The Kedarkantha trek best time question has a short answer — December to April, the official season — and a much more useful long one, because 'winter' on this mountain is really four different treks. Snow depth, temperatures and crowds change month by month between Sankri and the 12,500 ft summit. Here is what each month actually looks like, from our batch records, including the honest word on the off-season months people keep searching for.
When is Kedarkantha snow time?
First snowfall usually dusts the upper camps in early-to-mid December, builds through January, and peaks in February. Snow then lingers on the summit slopes well into April. If 'walking on deep snow' is the whole point of your trek, aim for January or February; if 'some snow, softer weather' sounds better, take December or March-April.
Kedarkantha trek in December
The season opener. Fresh snow above Juda-ka-Talab (9,100 ft), festive energy in the Christmas and New Year batches, and the busiest campsites of the year in the last week. Daytime temperatures run roughly 8-12 degrees C on the trail, falling to -5 degrees C or a little lower at night in the upper camps. Book earliest for this month.
Kedarkantha trek in January and February
Peak snow time. The pine forests load up like a postcard, Juda-ka-Talab freezes solid, and the summit push is a full snow climb on micro-spikes. Days sit around 5-10 degrees C; nights at Kedarkantha Base (11,250 ft) drop to -5 to -10 degrees C — which our -15 degree C sleeping bags are built for. Crowds thin noticeably after the first week of January.
Kedarkantha trek in March and April
Spring snow. The weather softens — days of 12-18 degrees C, nights around 0 to -5 degrees C — while snowfields still hold on the upper mountain, especially through March. April adds rhododendron colour in the lower forests. This is the kindest window for families and first-timers who want snow without the deep-winter cold.
Can you do Kedarkantha in August, September or October?
Honest answer: our Kedarkantha departures run December to April only. August is monsoon — leech-wet forests and obscured views. September-October are pretty but snowless, and this trail's magic is its snow; if you have those months free, our Har Ki Dun or Kuari Pass treks are in peak season then and will serve you far better. Kedarkantha rewards the wait for winter.
