Bali Pass in September and October: Best Time, Weather and Temperatures
Bali Pass in September is the version most veterans recommend — but it is only half the story, because this 16,207 ft crossover runs two short windows, May-June and September-October, and picks up radically different personalities in each. On a trek this serious, choosing your month is a safety decision as much as a scenery one. Here is the month-by-month weather and temperature picture from our crossing logs.
Bali Pass in May and June
The snow season. The upper route from Ruinsara Tal onwards is heavily snow-covered, the pass climb is a true snow slope, and the scenery — Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch above white valleys — is at its most Himalayan. It is also the harder version: slower going, bigger cornices, and pre-dawn pass temperatures of -10 to -15 degrees C with wind chill. Lower camps see days of 12-18 degrees C.
Bali Pass in September
Post-monsoon stability makes September the sweet spot for most trekkers: firmer trails, snow shrunk back to the pass itself, and rinsed skies over the Ruinsara valley's rhododendron-ringed lake. Expect days of 12-18 degrees C in the valleys, nights of -2 to 5 degrees C at Ruinsara Tal (11,590 ft) and -5 to -10 degrees C at the 13,100 ft Odari base camp.
Bali Pass trek in October
The last and coldest window. Crystal visibility — the Bandarpoonch panorama from the pass is at its sharpest all year — but nights turn hard: -10 degrees C and below at base camp, and fresh early-winter snowfall can arrive any week. We run October batches early in the month and watch forecasts closely.
Why doesn't Bali Pass run in winter or monsoon?
November to April the pass is buried and avalanche-prone; July-August the Tons and Yamuna valley approaches wash out and the rock sections turn treacherous. No responsible operator crosses in either window. Whatever the month, this remains a Difficult trek requiring verified prior high-altitude experience.
