Best Time for the Kafni Glacier Trek: May-June vs September-October

The best time for the Kafni Glacier trek comes down to two short windows — May-June and September-October — and in a valley this quiet, the difference between them is bigger than most trekkers expect. One gives you snow bridges and late-lying drifts under Nanda Kot; the other gives you an intensely green valley you will likely have entirely to yourselves. Here is how the windows compare, month by month.

Kafni in May and June

Spring reaches this valley late. In May, snow bridges still span the upper Kafni and drifts linger above the 11,615 ft camp, while rhododendrons finish blooming around Khati and Dwali below. Days run 12-18 degrees C in the villages, nights around 0-4 degrees C at the boulder camp. June warms and greens quickly, with bigger river flows from snowmelt.

Kafni in September

Our staff pick. The monsoon exits leaving the valley its deepest green of the year, waterfalls at full throat, and the trail empty — even Pindari's modest autumn traffic has not returned, let alone Kafni's. Days of 13-17 degrees C, nights of 2-6 degrees C at the high camp. The 12,660 ft viewpoint gets its first fully clear Nanda Kot mornings.

Kafni in October

The crisp finale: golden birch, frosty mornings, and the sharpest light on Nanda Kot and Nandabhanar. Nights turn properly cold — -2 to -6 degrees C up-valley — and the season closes as early snow arrives late in the month. Days remain pleasant at 10-15 degrees C.

Why not the other months?

July-August monsoon makes the river-hugging trail between Khati and Dwali genuinely hazardous, and November-April buries the upper valley in snow with no support infrastructure. Two windows is not a marketing choice; it is the valley's own timetable.
