Kedarkantha vs Brahmatal is the question we answer most often between October and February, because they are the two great winter treks of Uttarakhand and most people only have leave for one. We run both, so here is the honest comparison — no favourites, just facts from our own trails.
How do the numbers compare?
Kedarkantha: 6 days, 12,500 ft, Easy-Moderate, ₹14,999 + 5% GST, basecamp Sankri (185 km from Dehradun), season December to April. Brahmatal: 4 days, 12,250 ft, Moderate, ₹9,999 + 5% GST, basecamp Lohajung (reached from Rishikesh), season December to March. Similar altitudes — very different shapes of trek.
Which trek has better views?
Different prizes. Kedarkantha gives you a true summit with a 360-degree sweep — Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak — earned via a 3 AM push. Brahmatal gives you Trishul and Nanda Ghunti face-on for two full days, plus the frozen Brahmatal lake. If you want one perfect summit moment, pick Kedarkantha; if you want giant peaks in your face for longer, pick Brahmatal.
Which is easier for first-timers?
Kedarkantha, clearly. It is rated Easy-Moderate with short 4-6 km days and an extra buffer day, while Brahmatal is a Moderate grade that packs an 8 km summit day into a 4-day itinerary. First Himalayan trek ever? Kedarkantha. Second winter trek, or short on leave? Brahmatal.
What about crowds and cost?
Kedarkantha is the most popular winter trek in India, and December weekends show it. Brahmatal draws noticeably thinner traffic on the same dates. On budget, Brahmatal wins at ₹9,999 versus ₹14,999 — though per day the two packages cost almost the same, and both include -15 degree C sleeping bags, micro-spikes, meals and permits.
The verdict
Choose Kedarkantha for a first trek, a proper summit and a longer itinerary; choose Brahmatal for bigger close-up peaks, fewer people and a tighter budget or calendar. Or do what many of our trekkers do: one this winter, the other the next. Both are open for booking on our Kedarkantha and Brahmatal pages.
