Har Ki Dun Trek Guide: Into the Valley of Gods

The Har Ki Dun trek is the one we recommend when someone says they want culture, not just scenery. The trail follows the Supin river through villages like Gangaad and Osla that have stood for 300 years — wooden temples, amaranth fields, ways of life that predate maps — before opening into a vast meadow amphitheatre at 11,675 ft beneath Swargarohini, the mythical stairway to heaven.

What is the Har Ki Dun trek route?

Day 1 drives 185 km from Dehradun to Sankri (6,400 ft). Day 2 drives to the Dhatmeer roadhead and walks 9 km along the Supin to Gangaad at 8,000 ft. Day 3 climbs 8 km past Osla and its remarkable wooden temple to a ridge camp at Kalkatiya Dhar (9,800 ft) with Swargarohini dead ahead.

Day 4 enters the Valley of Gods itself — 8 km to Har Ki Dun at 11,675 ft, camping just below at Boslo. Day 5 is a long 13 km descent via Chillurgad to Dhatmeer, and Day 6 returns you to Dehradun by evening.

Which season is best for Har Ki Dun?

Two windows: April to June for spring meadows and flowing rivers, and September to November for crisp post-monsoon clarity. Both are excellent; autumn tends to give the sharpest views of Swargarohini.

How fit do you need to be?

Rated Moderate. The gradients are gentle river-valley grades, but days are long — up to 13 km. If you can comfortably walk 10 km with a light pack, you will love this trail. It is a natural second trek after something like Kedarkantha or Nag Tibba.

What is the Har Ki Dun trek cost?

₹12,999 + 5% GST per person, covering all meals on trek, alpine tents with sleeping bags and mats, trek leader and local guides, forest permits and camping charges, and twice-daily health checks. The Dehradun-Sankri shareable cab and offloading are extra.

How to reach Sankri?

Get to Dehradun by train or air (Jolly Grant is the nearest airport), then take the 8-hour shared cab up the Tons valley. Stay in Dehradun the night before departure.

Do you need permits?

The trail lies in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary; entry permits are arranged by us and included. Carry two passport photos and a government photo ID.
