Kedartal vs Gaumukh Tapovan: Choosing Your Gangotri Trek
Kedartal vs Gaumukh Tapovan is the great Gangotri dilemma. Both treks leave from the same temple town at 10,000 ft, both are rated Difficult, both run May-June and September-October inside Gangotri National Park — and they deliver two completely different masterpieces. One is a fierce climb to a mirror lake under Thalaysagar; the other is a pilgrimage to the source of the Ganga and the meadow beneath Shivling. Here is how to choose.
How do the treks compare on paper?
Kedartal: 5 days, high point 15,485 ft, ₹14,999 + 5% GST, prior high-altitude experience mandatory. Gaumukh Tapovan: 7 days, high point 14,640 ft at Tapovan, ₹20,999 + 5% GST, with 14 km walking days and a steep moraine scramble. Kedartal is steeper and higher; Gaumukh Tapovan is longer with bigger daily distances.
Which is harder?
Kedartal, by a nose — its 5,500 ft gain in two walking days and the airy Spider Wall traverse (fixed lines provided) make it the sharper test, and it is the one where we make prior high-altitude experience mandatory. Gaumukh Tapovan spreads its difficulty across distance instead: two 14 km corridor days and the loose moraine climb to Tapovan.
Which has the better payoff?
Impossible to lose. Kedartal gives you Thalaysagar, Bhrigupanth and Manda reflected in a still glacial lake — the famous mirror, plus bharal on the scree. Gaumukh Tapovan gives you the ice cave where the Ganga is born, and dawn on Shivling's perfect pyramid from a meadow where sadhus live. Choose the mirror for drama, the source for meaning.
Practical notes for both
Both start with the 240 km Dehradun-Gangotri drive and both need Gangotri National Park permits, which we arrange — and which are capped daily, so early booking matters twice as much here. Train two to three months for either.
The good news
Nobody stops at one Gangotri trek. Pick your first on our Kedartal or Gaumukh Tapovan page — the other will still be waiting upriver.
