A Milam Glacier trek packing list is a different animal from a weekend-trek checklist: ten consecutive days on the old Indo-Tibet trade route, no resupply beyond Munsiyari, ITBP document checks, and weather that swings from a warm gorge at 6,070 ft to 11,500 ft moraine. Here is exactly what our Johar valley guides tell every batch to carry — and what to leave in Kathgodam.
The documents come first
This trail passes ITBP check posts near the border. Indian nationals must carry an original government photo ID — not a photocopy, not a phone screenshot — and it must match your booking name. Foreign nationals need district administration clearance we arrange well in advance. Pack IDs in a waterproof pouch you can reach without unpacking.
Clothing for three climates
The gorge days are warm and humid — a quick-dry tee and sun hat weather. The upper Johar valley is high-desert cold: thermals, fleece, a padded shell, cap and gloves for Milam's 11,220 ft nights. Pack exactly two trekking outfits and rotate; ten days tempts people into five outfits, and their shoulders pay. We provide tents, sleeping bags and mats.
Feet are everything on this trail
You will walk over 100 km, much of it on rock-cut gorge trail. Broken-in high-ankle boots, four pairs of socks (rotate two, sleep in one), blister tape from day one, and trekking poles for the 17 km final day into Munsiyari. This is the trek where footwear shortcuts end trips.
The 10-day specifics people miss
A 20,000 mAh power bank (no charging past Munsiyari and phone network dies in the gorge), double sunscreen and lip balm, a headlamp with spare batteries, a repair kit (needle, thread, tape), rehydration salts, and a book for village evenings — Milam's ruins at dusk deserve unhurried company.
Keep it under 12 kg
Everything above fits in 11-12 kg including the rucksack. Offloading to mules is available as an extra if you would rather walk light — arrange it at booking. All camping gear, meals and permits are covered in the ₹19,999 + 5% GST package.
