Pangarchulla Trek: A Guide to the 15,069 ft Snow Summit

The Pangarchulla trek answers a specific craving: you have done a pass trek or two, and now you want a peak. A proper one. This 7-day route out of Joshimath climbs the familiar Kuari Pass approach, then peels off for a 15,069 ft summit push over boulder fields and long snow slopes — with Nanda Devi, Dronagiri and Hathi-Ghoda in your face the whole way. The thrill of a peak, not just a pass.

Pangarchulla Trek: A Guide to the 15,069 ft Snow Summit

What is the Pangarchulla trek itinerary?

Day 1 drives 250 km from Rishikesh along the Alaknanda to Joshimath (6,150 ft). Day 2 drives to Dhak and climbs through Tugasi's terraced fields to Gulling (9,600 ft). Day 3 ascends through oak-rhododendron forest to the Khullara meadow at 11,010 ft, where Pangarchulla's snow cone first appears.

Day 4 is a smart acclimatisation day — climb high towards the Kuari Pass ridges at 12,516 ft, sleep low back at Khullara. Day 5 is summit day: a 2 AM start, 12 km and around 12 hours through boulder fields and steep snow to the 15,069 ft summit and its panorama of the Nanda Devi sanctuary wall. Days 6-7 descend to Dhak and drive home via Joshimath.

When is the best time for Pangarchulla?

March to June. March-April is the classic window, when the summit slopes hold deep, consolidated snow that makes the climb both harder and far more beautiful. May-June offers a drier, rockier climb with warmer camps.

How hard is the summit day?

Rated Difficult, and the 12-hour summit day earns it. One prior Himalayan trek is strongly recommended before attempting this. Train for two to three months: long back-to-back walking days, stairs with a loaded pack, and real cardio. Micro-spikes, gaiters and summit-day ropes are provided, with a technical guide on the mountain.

What does the Pangarchulla trek cost?

₹13,999 + 5% GST per person — remarkable value for a guided 15,000 ft summit. Included: all meals, alpine tents with -15 degree C sleeping bags, micro-spikes, gaiters and summit ropes, trek leader plus technical guide, and forest permits. The Rishikesh-Joshimath shareable cab, offloading and insurance are extra.

How to reach Joshimath?

Rail to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then the 10-hour shared cab through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag.
