Long before motor roads, pilgrims walked between Gangotri and Kedarnath over a great grassy ridge — and the Panwali Kantha trek follows them still. The road builders went around this ridge; the meadows never got the memo. Six days from Ghuttu, the trail climbs an age-worn pilgrim staircase onto kilometres of rolling kharak meadows at over 11,000 ft, with Chaukhamba's four summits filling the northern sky and a horizon that runs from Thalaysagar to the guardian peaks of Kedarnath.
What is the Panwali Kantha trek route?
Day 1 drives 170 km from Rishikesh via Devprayag and Tehri into the Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu (5,000 ft). Day 2 climbs the old pilgrim staircase 8 km through terraced fields and oak forest to a spring-fed clearing at 8,530 ft. Day 3 crests onto the vast kharak meadows of Panwali Kantha at 11,155 ft — and the forest simply never closes again.
Day 4 is a dream traverse day rolling 9 km along the meadow crest past shepherd settlements and the herb gardens the dhamis harvest. Day 5 is one long 13 km descent back to hot dal-bhat in Ghuttu, and Day 6 drives home to Rishikesh.
When is the best time for Panwali Kantha?
April to June and September to November. Spring greens the kharaks and brings the shepherds up; autumn empties the meadows and clears the horizon from Thalaysagar to Kedarnath's peaks.
How difficult is it?
Rated Moderate. The climbs are steady rather than steep — this route was graded for generations of pilgrims — but Day 5's 13 km descent tests the knees. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.
What does the trek cost?
The Panwali Kantha trek package is ₹12,999 + 5% GST per person: all meals on trek, alpine tents with sleeping bags and mats, trek leader with local guides, forest permits and camping charges, and twice-daily health checks. The Rishikesh-Ghuttu shareable cab and offloading are extra.
How to reach Ghuttu?
Train to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then the 8-hour shared cab via Devprayag and Tehri into the Bhilangana valley.
