Roopkund Trek Permits in 2026: What's Restricted, What's Possible

Roopkund trek permits are the single most misunderstood topic in Indian trekking, and misinformation costs people flights and leave. The plain truth: access to the skeleton lake is currently restricted by Uttarakhand forest department orders, and any operator promising guaranteed Roopkund dates is promising something the forest division has not. Here is how the permit situation actually works — and how we run the trek within it.

Roopkund Trek Permits in 2026: What's Restricted, What's Possible

Why is Roopkund restricted?

The route crosses the ecologically fragile high bugyals and the sensitive Nanda Devi region, and the forest department has curtailed access to protect both. Restrictions have shifted over the years; what matters for your planning is the current position: batches run only subject to permits being granted by the Nanda Devi region forest division for specific dates.

How do TrekNova Roopkund batches work then?

You register for a window, we apply through the forest division, and your departure date is confirmed to you only after permit verification. We never charge you into a date we cannot legally run — if permits are refused for your window, we shift your batch or refund you in full. Build flexibility into flights and leave, and treat any 'guaranteed' Roopkund departure elsewhere with suspicion.

What documents and experience do you need?

A government photo ID for the permit application, and — this is a forest-division condition as much as ours — prior high-altitude trek experience. Roopkund is a Difficult trek to 15,750 ft; the paperwork and the fitness bar exist for the same reason.

Is there a permit-free alternative?

Yes, and it is superb: our Ali Bedni Bugyal trek covers the most beautiful stretch of the same trail — the twin meadows and Bedni Kund with Trishul reflected in it — on regular Chamoli forest division permits, 5 days, ₹10,999 + 5% GST, no restrictions. Many Roopkund aspirants do it while they wait.

Play the long game

The lake has waited centuries; it rewards patient trekkers. Register interest on our Roopkund page and we will contact you the moment the forest division confirms dates — or start with the meadows on our Ali Bedni Bugyal page.
