The Surya Top trek is named for what it does to the dawn: from its 12,300 ft crown, the rising sun ignites the entire Gangotri range in front of you — Srikanth, Jaonli, Draupadi ka Danda — one summit at a time. It sits right next door to famous Dayara Bugyal, starts from the apple-orchard village of Barsu, and passes the hidden lake and meadows of Barnala Tal on the way up. Same postcode as the crowds, a fraction of the footfall.
What is the Surya Top trek itinerary?
Day 1 drives 185 km from Dehradun up the Bhagirathi valley past Uttarkashi to Barsu (7,380 ft), with an evening walk through stone lanes and dinner at the homestay. Day 2 climbs 4 km through oak and rhododendron to camp at Barnala Tal (10,000 ft) — prayer flags, grazing horses, and first big views of Srikanth.
Day 3 is the pre-dawn push up open ridgelines to Surya Top at 12,300 ft for that famous sunrise, followed by a long descent and a lazy camp afternoon. Day 4 drops back to Barsu and drives home to Dehradun by evening.
When is the best time for Surya Top?
December to April — this is a winter and spring trek. Deep winter delivers proper snow slopes on the summit ridge (micro-spikes and gaiters are provided in snow months); March-April softens the weather while keeping snow up high.
How difficult is it?
Rated Easy-Moderate. Summit day is 8 km and around 7 hours, mostly on open ridgeline. A month of consistent walking and a few stair sessions will set you up well — it is a fine first snow trek.
What does the Surya Top trek cost?
₹7,999 + 5% GST per person: all meals on trek, alpine tents with -15 degree C sleeping bags and mats, micro-spikes and gaiters in snow months, trek leader and local guide, and forest permits and camping charges. The Dehradun-Barsu shareable cab and offloading are extra.
How to reach Barsu?
Dehradun by overnight train or flight, then the 8-hour shared cab up the Bhagirathi past Uttarkashi. Barsu's homestay dinner on night one is worth the drive alone.
