Valley of Flowers Trek: Your Guide to the UNESCO Monsoon Bloom

Most Himalayan treks avoid the monsoon. The Valley of Flowers trek exists because of it. This UNESCO World Heritage valley in Chamoli erupts into a carpet of more than 500 flower species between July and September — primulas, potentillas, blue poppies and the rare Brahma Kamal — and then it is gone for the year. Frank Smythe stumbled into it in 1931; people have been making the pilgrimage ever since.

What is the Valley of Flowers trek itinerary?

Day 1 is a long 290 km monsoon drive from Haridwar up the Alaknanda past all five Prayags to Govindghat (6,000 ft). Day 2 follows the roaring Lakshman Ganga 10 km up a well-paved pilgrim trail to Ghangaria at 10,000 ft. Day 3 is the valley itself — 8 km return through kilometres of bloom under Rataban's snows.

Day 4 climbs steeply to Hemkund Sahib, the glacial lake gurudwara at 14,107 ft, where Brahma Kamal bloom in the rocks and hot khichdi at the langar tastes like a blessing. Day 5 descends to Govindghat and drives to Joshimath; Day 6 returns to Haridwar.

When does the Valley of Flowers bloom?

The season is July to September, full stop. The valley officially opens June to October, but the bloom peaks mid-July through August. Expect rain — that is the deal you make for the flowers — and pack a proper rain layer and quick-dry clothing.

How difficult is the Valley of Flowers trek?

Rated Easy-Moderate, but respect the Hemkund day: a 12 km round trip to 14,107 ft is a real effort. The trails are well-paved pilgrim paths throughout, which keeps this within reach of fit beginners. Ponies and helicopters operate to Ghangaria if needed (at your own cost).

What does the trek cost?

The Valley of Flowers trek package is ₹11,999 + 5% GST per person and includes all meals on trek, lodge and guesthouse stays at Govindghat and Ghangaria (no camping in the rain!), trek leader and local guides, Valley of Flowers National Park entry fees, and twice-daily health checks. The Haridwar-Govindghat shareable cab and pony or helicopter services are extra.

How do you reach Govindghat?

Haridwar is the railhead, well connected to Delhi by train. From there it is an 11-hour drive to Govindghat — long, but the Alaknanda in monsoon spate is a spectacle in itself.

What permits are required?

Day permits for the Valley of Flowers National Park — part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site — are arranged by us and included. Carry a government photo ID.

The bloom won't wait

This is a strictly seasonal trek with a hard cutoff. July and August dates are live on our Valley of Flowers page — book before the season closes on you.
