Pangarchulla Peak Trek in December
Weather, temperatures, packing and honest advice — from the team that runs this trail.
The quick answer
We don't recommend Pangarchulla Peak in December. The trail is at its best in Mar, Apr, May, Jun — and there are better options this month (listed below). The trek runs 6 days from Joshimath, Chamoli, reaching 15,069 ft at its highest point, and is graded Moderate-Difficult (4/5). The fee is ₹9,500 + 5% GST with permits, meals, camping and certified trek leaders included.
Why not this month: July–August monsoon soaks the steep approach; November to February the summit ridge holds too much soft snow for a safe push — the boulder maze underneath becomes treacherous.
Weather & trail conditions in December
Expect snow on the upper sections of the trail and frozen water sources near camps. Micro-spikes and gaiters (provided on our snow treks) become essential above the snowline, and daylight hours are short — days start early and end early. On Pangarchulla Peak, expect daytime temperatures around 5°C on the trail and roughly -12°C at the highest camps after dark in December.
