Deoban Trek Guide: Deodar Forests and a 200-km Himalayan Horizon

The Deoban trek proves you do not need altitude to feel the Himalayas. Deoban means 'forest of the gods', and one walk under its cathedral-quiet deodars near the old cantonment town of Chakrata tells you the name is earned. The trail tops out at 9,514 ft at Vyas Shikhar — a viewpoint where, on clear days, the snow wall runs unbroken for some 200 km, from Swargarohini all the way to the peaks of Kinnaur.

What is the Deoban trek itinerary?

Day 1 drives 95 km from Dehradun up through Chakrata into the deodar belt, then walks a short 3 km to camp in a forest clearing at 9,350 ft — silence, resin-scent, and koklass pheasants calling at dusk. Day 2 is a full day wandering the forest and climbing to the Vyas Shikhar viewpoint at 9,514 ft. Day 3 descends and drives home, reaching Dehradun by mid-afternoon.

When is the best time for Deoban?

October to April. Winter dusts the deodars with snow and sharpens the great horizon; autumn and spring are ideal for birders — this forest is one of the best birding pockets in the Dehradun hills, so bring the long lens.

How difficult is it?

Rated Easy, with short distances and gentle forest trails. This is a superb first camping trip, a birding weekend, or a recovery trek between bigger objectives.

What does the Deoban trek cost?

₹5,999 + 5% GST per person: all meals on trek, alpine tents on twin sharing with sleeping bags, trek leader and local guide, forest permits and camping charges, and a bonfire when weather permits. The Dehradun-Chakrata shareable cab is extra.

How to reach Chakrata?

Dehradun by train or air, then the 3-hour drive to Chakrata. Because the approach is so short, this itinerary works even without taking extra leave.

One important permit note

Chakrata falls in a cantonment-controlled area. We handle the entry formalities and Kalsi forest division permits, but this trail is open to Indian nationals only — and you must carry an original government photo ID, not a photocopy.

Come hear the silence

Few places this peaceful are this close to a railhead. Dates are live on our Deoban page.
